Jesus' birthday and cookies

Happy Birthday for Jesus celebrations! May you enjoy family times as you wait for 2008.
Second graders read Matthew 2: 1-12, the story of the Magi, which they had almost completely memorized, in chapel on Thursday, December 14, then for parents on Friday. They sang, "We Three Kings" attempting to sound like kings themselves.

After decorating sugar cookies with our 5th grade Book Buddies, they delivered them to many ECA staff and workers. Each second grader took a ribbon-tied bag with 2 cookies inside to give to someone who could not give anything back to them. We were following the Magi's example of giving, expecting no returns.

Getting refreshed and ready to return January 9....

Christmas and cookies

THE CHRISTMAS STORY focuses in 2nd grade on the Magi (wisemen) who followed the star, searching for Jesus. We practice Matthew 2: 1-12 each day, and will be saying these verses on Thursday in our chapel, and on Friday during our Christmas program for you.
FRIDAY´s program will begin with pre-kinder kids through 2nd grades, then we´ll enjoy a cookie break before 3rd – 5th graders present. Students are eager to perform for you!

We will make COOKIES and decorations this week, and listen to stories like The Littlest Magi, The Christmas Miracle, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

SPELLING review will reinforce the words we have studied to continue to strengthen the foundation of English spellings and sounds. We´ll search for words with specific sounds and spellings the the books we´ve read recently, and practice words on the Word Wall.

MONEY in math helps us practice adding and subtracting by 5´s and 10´s. Chapter test will be next week.

Celebrating in this season,

The Magi and the stars

THANK YOU to each parent who helped us on Pumpkin Pie Day!! We could not have done it without each of you!

MATTHEW 2: 1-12 is the story of the Magi in their search for the new KING. We´ll memorize these verses by December 19. Students are illustrating a page for each verse after we discuss its meaning.

Like the Magi, we can learn about Jesus from the STARS! We´ll study constellations, and draw the moon each night on the MOON calendar.

SPELLING words for this week: his, lonely, just, alone, about, one, much, food, balloon, five, law, led, layer, year, soft, house, path, way, as, some. Test is on Friday.

Comparing communities

November 6, 2007

Dear parents,
I hope you had a safe holiday and extra family time this past long weekend!

DANIEL had confidence that God would hear and answer his prayers, especially about interpreting the king’s dream in chapter 2. Our verse is our confident statement: Hebrews 13:6 I say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not be afraid. What can people do to me?”

MISSION SPOT on Fridays is led by Mr. and Mrs. Green, for an intense 15 minutes. We have learned about sacrifices and struggles of Wm. Carey and his family as missionaries to India. I have been delighted to see the keen interest of 2nd graders. Ask your child what he or she remembers about the Carey family.

READING Squanto gives us practice in phonics, vocabulary, and writing summaries of each chapter. Your children are reading with me, and then reading cooperatively with partners. It's an exciting way to learn on USA history.Someone even noted what happened to Squanto as a reminder of what happened to Joseph in the Bible.

ICE CREAM CELEBRATION Last Friday we celebrated all the reading your children have done outside class, since August, with ice cream and lots of sweet toppings! Now we begin going around the room again, with recorded titles of books. Thanks for encouraging your child to remember to read 20 minutes each evening.

BOOK BUDDIES Fifth graders read the library books your child has chosen after library time every other week. They are encouraging examples of better readers. Ms. D. and I are pleased with positive attitudes in all students.

COMMUNITY is a group of people living near each other.. Thanks to Sam Lara’s mom, we have “ECA Community” letters labeling our map of our observations on our field trip walk, on the wall. On Wednesday, your child’s map of his or her home community is due to come to school, and we will compare. We will also inspect a native American community, like Squanto’s, to see how they lived and found food. Soon we’ll compare with the early Pilgrims’ community, too.

MATH: Using green units and cubes we’ll practice changing and exchanging ones and tens so we can add and subtract larger numbers.

SPELLING list F contains 20 words that will be on Tuesday’s homework. Test is on Friday.

COMPUTER lessons are now taught by Mr. Hicks, who is more knowledgable in correct terminology that I am! I am thankful for his help in challenging my students to practice typing and learning new procedures.

MRS. MOLINA continues to rest and recover. We pray for her often, and miss her. Thank you to Katia’s mom, Sam’s mom, Esteban’s mom for helping us in class!

For the sake of the children,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

Squanto and Stanley

Dear parents,
“Today will be a test of our character as we respond to the excitement and energy of our students, and a crazy schedule, and maybe, weather!” Mrs. Afanador cautioned us during Friday’s teacher meeting. “How we adapt and react will be evidence of the difference Jesus makes.” I wonder what you saw? As I reflected the next day on the fun we had, I realized I forgot to say “THANK YOU” to YOU, the parents who came to help change clothes, watch the parade, attend chapel, participate in booths, and care for your children during lunch and afterwards. YOU ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

BIBLE: Daniel 1 and 6 show his faithfulness to making wise decisions based on what God said, regardless of the king or lions!
MEMORY VERSE Hebrews 11:6 “Without faith it’s impossible to please God. Whoever comes to Him must believe that He is, and He rewards those who seek Him.”

US HISTORY: We continue chapter by chapter in the story of Squanto, who lived in the New World during the time Englishmen were exploring it. We identify examples of grammar, phonics, and vocabulary, and read with partners daily.

SOCIAL STUDIES : Second graders from a school in California sent a paper boy character from the book titled Flat Stanley for us to dress as an ECA student. On Wednesday we’ll take a walk around our school neighborhood, and Flat Stanley will go along. . We will send him back to CA with pictures and journal of his time at our school
We’ll make a map of the geographical community around ECA. NEXT WEEK your child’s assignment will be to draw a map of his house and community. Watch for details.

MATH: Counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, and grouping by 10’s, we’ll work on problems like: How much money did we earn at our booth on Friday? How many days have we been in school since August 7?

WORDWORK: Spelling words this week include: old, bread, little, child, hot, star, cold, day, green, wall, ice, milk, long, hair, wild, shot, sea, floor, flat, land. Homework will be sentences and illustrations, alphabetical order, copying, and test sentences.

VISITORS: Our chapel speakers in the photos above were Cindy and Kelly Bourn, a mother and daughter visiting from Canada, who sang and acted out skits demonstrating ways to show love at school. Cindy, an experienced teacher, taught teachers about positive discipline. PRAY we will practice what we learned.

MRS. MOLINA successfully survived her surgery last week. She reports she is learning to take care of her body, and improving every day, with her husband’s help. PRAY for them both, as she recovers, as her kids adapt to her need to rest, and her husband seeks God’s guidance for a new job.

For the sake of the kids,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

Dear parents and friends,
THANK YOU so much for your helpful comments and insights about your children that you gave me at Parent-Teacher conferences last week! I appreciate praying and working on your child´s training team with you, under the Master Teacher.

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER DAY is the first exciting event on Friday. Please help your child plan the character and costume to wear. Fill in the blanks on “Christian Character Day” page for clues, due on WEDNESDAY. On FRIDAY, you are welcome to join us to help kids change into their costumes at 10 am, and stay for the chapel, led by Flavio and Renee Uribe. You may pick your child up at his/her classroom at 12:10, to eat lunch together. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CHILD FOR THE AFTERNOON. If you can´t come, please write me a note so I can plan for him/her.

BIBLE: Joshua obeyed God with his whole heart. We’ll look at what tempts us to disobey. Review Jeremiah 7: 23 AND practice
Colossians 3: 23
Whatever you do,
work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord,
not for people.

SOCIAL STUDIES and READING We will begin to read Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims by Clyde R. Bulla. I plan to read one chapter each day between now and Thanksgiving break in November. SURPRISES!

Dear parents,

SURPRISES! I’m sure some of you were as surprised as we were when we heard of the President’s decreed vacation for students! But not teachers. I hope the change will be refreshing for everyone, and that you will be able to change your schedule for your children’s sake. I look forward to discussing your child’s progress next Thursday at Parent-Teacher conferences. My voice should be strong to answer questions, too.

BIBLE: Moses gave JOSHUA the huge responsibility to lead God’s people, but God promised to be with him as he studied God’s Word, obeyed what God said with courage, and followed Him with his whole heart. Our Bible verses are God’s words to Joshua--
“Think about My Word day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and have lots of courage. Don’t be afraid, don’t be dismayed, for the Lord your God will go with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1: 8-9)

READING: We are beginning reading groups. One will continue in Frog and Toad Are Friends, with “The Surprise.” The others will read about “Anansi and the Talking Melon.” Watching for characters who are friendly or tricky, we’ll practice ways long e is spelled, the sounds “y” and “ed” make in words. Kids are also practicing SELF-CONTROL by reading to themselves quietly, and reading with partners quietly.

SCIENCE: How insects move and eat in their world will be our focus and experience. We’ll go on an insect hunt outside, and race like insects. I am excited to begin reading Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White to my students. It is an excellent story of friendship between a spider and a pig.

MATH: We are finishing the first chapter in the workbook, with a test on Tuesday. The rest of the week we will be drawing and counting stars to practice grouping. We’ll also begin reviewing USA coins.

SPELLING: List D-1 on Monday includes: man, make, boy, jump, book, read, dog, play, home, are. D-2 on Tuesday: school, must, street, was, mother, has, time, have, hand, had. Students will write 5 sentences each night, drawing a picture LABELLED WITH THE SPELLING WORDS, for each sentence. They’ll learn a song about silent –e in a word, sort by vowel sounds, and make foldable contractions.

HOMEWORK HELPERS: For SPELLING, please allow your child to form the sentences. Ask your child to read the sentences to you aloud, and give help with other words. In MATH, please check your child’s work, that it is complete. If many answers are wrong, ask your child to think again about the answers. If it is obvious that your child does not understand, please help him.

PE: Ms. Morris has not been pleased with the second graders in her classes. They have missed learning time because they have not been ATTENTIVE to her directions. Please talk and pray about this with your child.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES I look forward to discussing your child’s progress next Thursday at Parent-Teacher conferences. I want to listen to what your child says about 2nd grade. My voice should be strong to answer questions, too.

For the sake of the children,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

Plagues of insects

Dear parents,
THANK YOU so much for participating in OPEN HOUSE. Each second grader was delighted to show off our workplace to you, the most important adults in their lives. Our class had 100% participation by students and adults! Maybe the advantage of my laryngitis was that you communicated more with your child...I was blessed by Mrs. Molina, Ms. Karl, and Mr.Hicks helping in class with instructions in English, too. Your kids read more directions in English, and followed procedures with minimal words! Their responses showed they are learning well how to act like second graders!!

BIBLE Moses was courageous and diligent in obeying God´s command to return to the Pharoah. He showed His POWER to the Egyptian PEOPLE todefeat all the their gods through the 10 plagues. We´ll make a little book about plagues, and memorize Psalm 56: 3,4
¨When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God whose Word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.¨
Kids will write and draw about their fears.

SCIENCE Insects are what we are observing and categorizing: body parts, how they use antenae and mouths to survive in their habitats.n We´ll be learning about character and behavior from Buzz Bee and Puff Uppity Ant (stories by Ethel Barrett.)

READING We will practice being effective partners, learning how to choose a book, and how to coach each other in reading. Two groups will read either ¨The Letter¨ (Frog and Toad Are Friends) or ¨Spiders Everywhere.¨

SPELLING list is C, with prepositions. Students will practice 10 words on Monday, 10 more on Tuesday. Homework includes writing 5 sentences, and drawing a picture for each sentence,to make sure they know what the words mean. They will also sort words by color-coded vowel sounds.

MATH centers on word problems, a most difficult way to work with number concepts.
8 is our number for practicing math facts. Please practice both addition and subtraction facts for 5´s, 6´s, 7´s, and 8´s to keep your child up to speed with these basic facts. Making up story problems would also increase their math thinking skills.

NO HALF DAY this Tuesday, since our October vacation week has been scheduled.

PRAY kids will keep learning how to follow directions, and act in responsible ways towards adults and each other in class and at recess.

For the sake of the children,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

Teaching responsibilty to students and Open House

Dear second graders’ parents,
The chopstick lessons in the photos above were taught by Ms. Olivera’s brother. He visited us to show photos of his time in China, when these students (in first grade) were praying for him regularly. We learned how to say “nee-how” to greet each other in the morning, saw octopus eaten as food and busy city street scenes. Learning about a different peoples is an example of a P word: “passport to the world.” God may someday call one of these children to tell Chinese about Him, giving him or her His authority to go make disciples.

We finished our P word booklets on Friday, so this week we will look for these ideas as we study MOSES, a humble man who had lots of “But”s when God called him to go. We’ll be watching for each other to put others before themselves, demonstrating humility. Proverbs says we learn humility first, then experience glory!
VERSE: Psalm 25: 9
”God guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.”

We will practice writing FRIENDLY LETTERS to say “Thank you” to Yena’s mother who talked with 2nd graders about China last Friday. She taught numbers and words she learned in Chinese, since she was a missionary there before coming to Colombia.

Mrs. Green will share with us about missions in CHAPEL on Thursday morning. Each Friday after this, she and her husband will speak in our weekly “Mission Spot”. Ask your child what he or she remembers, and pray God will raise up missionaries from ECA students, to go and teach disciples!

SPELLING WORDS: List B-1: tan, bag, can, beg, so, big, no, bog, pet, bug. List B-2: a, fish, an, odd, the, hill, good, hit, last, step. We will continue to review and reinforce the short vowel sounds, and illustrate, sort and alphabetize these words. Friday’s test will include all 20 words. Each student should draw a picture that shows each sentence her writes.

COMMUNITY CIRCLE happens every Friday morning until 9 am PE class. We discuss positive behaviors we’ve seen in each other, demonstrating Spirit fruit in action: compassion, kindness, patience…..We pass an object around the circle, to help us take turns listening and speaking. It’s a treat to hear kids “tattle” on each other this way!

RAISING RESPONSIBLE STUDENTS is my objective this week. I'll be reading books to describe 4 levels of behavior, illustrated by characters and in your child’s personalized drawing, demonstrated with a ball of paper! You will see your child’s art on your child’s desk when you visit us for ……

ELEMENTARY OPEN HOUSE, THURSDAY from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. I will be describing 2nd grade curriculum and strategies at 1:45 pm. There will be 2 scavenger hunts for you to take with your child, to learn to know people and places in our school and classroom, beginning when you pick up your 2nd grader from our room after lunch. I know my students will be excited to show off our room and work to you! And maybe clean desks, too I look forward to seeing many of you there!

For the sake of the children,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

PROGRESSING

September 11, 2007
Dear second graders’ parents,

A good night’s sleep does wonders after a busy weekend!! Our board/teacher retreat was wonderfully relaxing and challenging. How can God teach my students, through me and in spite of me?! I deeply appreciate your prayers!

BIBLE We continue adding pages to our TEN P WORDS booklet, as we learn about each word. Yesterday I told stories from my past about how God PREPARED me to become a teacher here. Today PROCLAMATION happens through the Jesus film. How we share our POSSESSIONS in PROJECTS are Wednesday’s words, then PARTNERSHIP with God and other Christians on Friday will finish our booklets.

VERSE to memorize for Friday Acts 1.8 “But you will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1.8

SPELLING The second part of list A (A/2) are go, my, run, ran, six, all, not, do, did, ten Students will sort these by vowels SOUNDS, and put them in abc (alphabetical) order. These are the words used for homework. Test is on Friday.

READING We will discuss how to act when others make fun of us, as Frog did to Toad in “A Swim.” It is difficult to respond in a forgiving way when our hearts are hurt. After identifying words ending with “-ed” students will sort them according to the 3 SOUNDS those letters make at the end of English words.

SOCIAL STUDIES We are looking at family traditions and “trees” of grandparents and parents to form our own class tree. Look for it during OPEN HOUSE on Sept. 20.

MATH Students will practice partners that make 6. They will learn the strategy of “making a 10” for making addition easier.

FRIDAY INTERNATIONAL FOCUS is a special given by parents to our class as teachers take the time to grow professionally during last period. Last month, Mr. Thornton talked about Canada. This week, Mrs. Kim, Yena’s mother, is scheduled to talk about CHINA with 2nd graders.

PROGRESS REPORTS are coming home Tuesday, Sept. 11. Please sign and return them by Tuesday, Sept. 18. I will appreciate any comments you think would help me better understand your child.

For the sake of the children,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

ALost Button

Dear parents,
SPELLING is our newest subject, with the first official list from our 2nd grade curriculum, A-1.
top, hat, but, be, and, am, cat,is, red, bed
Students should practice by writing sentences using the words, sorting by vowel sounds, alphabetizing, preparing for the test on Friday. I was pleased with the way my students responded to our first test last week.

READING focuses on the characters of Frog and Toad, in "A Lost Button." We will watch how they act like friends, and apply lessons to friendships in our classroom. Students will identify, sort and write words with o in "box", "toad", and "two." We are tuning our ears to vowel sounds and their various spellings.

MATH centers on partners of 6 (4,2...5,1...3,3...0,6) and doubles (2+2...12+12) Please play oral math games with your child to help these facts become quick and fast from memory.

SCIENCE I hope you heard what happened to our toad last week. We will have photos at Open House as well as the kids´drawings of what they saw. This week we will make pictures of habitats of amphibians and reptiles. High schoolers will teach us how to make paper frogs!

BIBLE We continue to learn about the P words, adding pages to pink or purple booklets. Ask your child to sing the P Word song. Exodus 9:16 is our verse to memorize by Thursday, Sept. 6.

THURSDAY is special for several reasons.
PHOTO DAY for elementary students. Please dress your child appropriately for a yearbook picture.
CHINA: Ms.Olivera´s brother, whom these students prayed for during his travels last year, will show his pictures and stories on Thursday morning, 8-8:40 am.
LAST DAY of school this week, since we teachers go on a retreat with the board members of ECA.

PRAY with me for second graders to learn the JOY that comes from obeying me, and speaking and acting in kind ways to each other. And that I will let PATIENCE fruit grow inside me!

For the sake of the children,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

Frog--ooops! Toad!

August 26. 2007
Dear parents,
Finally this is working again, thanks to Ms. Olivera, again!! I hope you enjoy finding PHOTOS of your children in action.

SCIENCE: Our class PET created much excitement last week. Cesar found a toad to buy after I ordered a frog. We will observe, draw, read, view video, make booklets, and eat toad eggs!! on FROG and TOAD DAY, on Tuesday, the HALF DAY this week.

READING: Reviewing short vowels sounds, we've read frog books. Ms. McLamb read A Frog in a Bog with them last week as I listened to individual students reading. We have read several books about Froggy, so will try to write our own Froggy story this week.

SPELLING: We are connecting color names to short vowels, and adding number names. Because we are practicing sorting procedures, these words will continue as our spelling words this week. I will give a test on Friday.

BIBLE: The past 2 weeks, students have learned the words to the Disciples' Prayer, Matthew 6: 9-13, in a song. Now we will practice praying as Jesus taught us. This week, we'll learn the 10 P words that describe what God has done, is doing, and will do! These give a framework for the Bible characters we will study all year. Watch for a pink or purple booklet with each P word illustrated to come home later. Ask your child to sing the P Word song.

MATH: After reviewing first grade concepts, students will practice counting on, doubles, and graphing. 5's pages will change to 6's pages, as they practice speed on basic math facts on 90 second quizzes.

RESPECT for God, others and myself is the measuring stick for behavior. I see students are responsive to me, following directions more quickly, and learning to give me their attention when the bell rings or my finger goes up. I enjoy starting the day by shaking each child's hand!

Thank you for your prayerful support of what is happening at ECA and in 2nd grade.

For the children's sake,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer

Getting ready

Dear second graders' parents,

This is my newest form of communication, with lots of help from Ms. Olivera. I hope you enjoyed our ECA picnic today as much as I did. I heard a family lost a lot of sleep last night, preparing the food. Mrs. Munoz always lives up to her reputation for attractive, delicious meals!

Today in class, we began practicing procedures for moving around in our room, and giving attention to the teacher. I told my life story, about my family, children, and a car accident. Students will take turns bringing in a poster full of photos, and telling stories about their lives. This is excellent public speaking practice. I will send a sign up sheet soon.

I have green folders and colored pencil boxes to sell, if your child would like. Folder costs $1.000; pencil case costs $2.000.

We will turn one folder into a F.R.O.G.S. to organize papers that travel between your home and school. This is For Responsible Organized and Growing Students! We will try to catch any real frogs that comme hopping by, too!

I will try to update this blog weekly, even though the photos may not change that often. When the computer cooperates with me, I will include homework assignments here.

We are off to a strong start. Pray I'll depend on God and not my own experience or wisdom. Thank you!

For growing students,
Mrs. Glenda Moyer
